Herman Melville had almost completed a "romance about the whaling
industry" when he met a man named Hawthorne whose literary theories
greatly influenced him. When Melville returned to his whaling yarn,
he did so with the notion of creating a new kind of romantic hero.
The result was Moby Dick. This unit explores Melville's career
and such works as Moby Dick, Bartleby the Scrivener, and
Billy Budd.
