Carl Sandburg traveled as a poet from the grime and rage of the
Chicago streets to a simple and honest lyricism. In the process,
he became a national symbol, a particularly American poet who spoke
to people of things they understood. This program examines Sandburg
as a man of varied talents: the author of 40 books, the Illinois
native who wrote about Chicago and Lincoln, and the poet who spoke
for the working class.
