The Middle Ages lasted for roughly 1,000 years, and witnessed the transformation of
Europe from a vast wilderness dotted with outposts of the Roman Empire, to a complex of nations with separate identities and political structures. This magnificent series traces the evolution of ideas during the Middle Ages, and discusses the social, economic, religious, and political highlights of the era.
1: The Early Middle Ages
This unit describes the beginning of the Middle Ages, and the chaos that would eventually give rise to the high civilization of the 11th to 13th centuries. Featured for examination are the collapse of the Roman Empire, the preservation of culture by the Church, the reign of Charlemagne, and the practice of feudalism and the manorial system.
2: The High Middle Ages
The peak of medieval civilization was the era of the Crusades, a time that saw fine art and architecture, and the growth of trade and industry. This was the age that produced chivalry, towns and guilds, a middle class, the first universities, and a new political structure known as the city-state.
3: The Late Middle Ages
The Late Middle Ages witnessed the disastrous Black Death, the Hundred Yearsí War, and severe social unrest of the peasants. Yet, this was also the age of the Italian Renaissance, with its growth of humanism, flourishing of the arts, and spirit of discovery that heralded the emergence of the modern world. The DVD includes a printable teacher guide featuring reproducible handouts, activities, exercises, vocabulary words, and other related materials.
